Origin Story

Bowdoin Underrepresented in Medical Professions (BUMP)–an initiative inspired by Johns Hopkins Underrepresented in Medical Professions (JUMP) and various other enrichment programs–strives to foster a community for pre-health Bowdoin students who identify as underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities and/or first-generation and limited-income students. BUMP provides pre-health workshops and curriculum, holistic advising, peer mentorship, and academic and professional resources to help underrepresented students navigate their pre-med/health journey at Bowdoin and beyond.

Our Mission

BUMP seeks to support and build a stronger community for underrepresented students on their path to health professions with the overarching goal of diversifying healthcare. While the club closely aligns itself to the American Association of Medical Colleges' definition of underrepresented in medicine, those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population, BUMP expands the meaning of this definition to include individuals marginalized on the basis of class, gender, sexuality, religion, etc.

BUMP offers programming that focuses on academic and social support, essential skills, and knowledge of the pathways to healthcare careers. By providing space for this community to grow, BUMP supports underrepresented students in paths toward health professions. BUMP students are supported throughout their undergraduate career to navigate and access high impact opportunities and learn what it means to be a strong candidate for medical and health professional schools.
