Polar Bear Swing Dance exists to teach West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, and general social dancing to the college community. A partner and social dance style originating in the early 1900s with many modern forms, swing dance is unfamiliar to most people who come to Bowdoin when they arrive. Thus, our primary goal and purpose is to provide quality swing dance lessons and information regarding social dance events so that the magic of the rhythms is never lost. Lessons guarantee that members—from beginner to advanced—have the confidence to dance both privately and socially, plus occasionally to perform. As a group whose focus is social dancing, though, we have flexibility and a fun-loving attitude that allows us to enjoy ourselves rather than spend most of our time preparing for competitions or extensive choreography. Our members can go out into the world and spread the energizing excitement of swing through theater, performance, and general social dance events. We often serve as a social center for the chem-free community, but of course everyone is welcome to take a hand and swing the night away!
