Mushroom Fest!! Mycorrhizal Minds Lecture on Tuesday, April 19 7:00 PM in the Roux Center Lantern. how can fungi and their fruiting bodies help us change the way we see ourselves and the earth? While fungi and mushrooms long precede the human species, they are able to facilitate incredibly complex networks of nutrient exchange in the soil and even allow trees to communicate with each other. They have “intelligence” in a form that is very different from human beings, but no less astounding. And, not unimportantly, mushrooms can literally change how our brains work. This event will highlight the beauty and diversity of our fungal friends. Join Professor Shreyas Sreenath, Professor Jean Yarbrough, and Michael DeLola for an interdiscplinary exploration of fungal fruit.

"Conservation group joins call to save Maine salmon rivers, including Kennebec River" by Colin Woodward for the Portland Press Herald. The Kennebec, Penobscot and Union rivers were ranked fourth most endangered bodies of water in American Rivers' annual report. The group cited the rivers’ significance to people and nature, the magnitude of threat they face and the existence of a major decision in the coming year that could affect their future.
"Second-hand value can help mitigate climate change" from the Bangor Daily News Opion Section. As Earth Day approaches, it’s hard not to feel powerless in the face of the global climate crisis. The threat is urgent and real: We’ve received ” code red” alerts and a ” final warning” from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These urgent alerts are important and powerful, but they can also feel overwhelming. It can seem like meaningful action only happens at the international scale. Here in Maine, however, we can lead the way on another kind of climate action — one that doesn’t get discussed much, but that offers environmental, social, and economic value in Maine and beyond: Mitigating climate change by participating in second-hand economies.
The tragedy of air pollution -- and an urgent demand for clean air | Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah for the TED Climate Podcast."Breathing clean air is every child's human right," says grassroots campaigner Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, sharing the heartbreaking story of her seven-year-old daughter, Ella Roberta, whose asthma was triggered to a fatal point by air pollution. Now, Adoo-Kissi-Debrah is on a mission to raise awareness about the harmful effects of unsafe air on our health and the planet. In this moving talk, she details why governments have an urgent responsibility to take action on air pollution -- and ensure that all children have a chance to live full and healthy lives.
As Arbor Day approaches and spring draws closer, I’m reminded of the immense comforts that trees and forests provide. Arbor day is an annual day set aside to celebrate trees, forests, and most importantly hope for a better tomorrow. In Maine, we are lucky enough to be surrounded by sprawling forests and beautiful trees on our campus that not only serve to amplify the natural beauty around us, but also bring value and diversity to local ecosystems. In addition to beautification and ecological value, forested areas have been shown to improve the mental health of residents and often serve as an important cornerstone of the community.
Despite the tumultuousness experienced over the past several years, local trees and forests serve as an everyday reminder of the peace and beauty that the natural environment brings to any community.
For the first Arbor Day Exhibition at Bowdoin, Sustainable Bowdoin is looking for art that explores the natural beauty that trees and forests provide. The exhibition is open to all students, and we are accepting a variety of mediums, including paintings, drawings, prints, photography, and written work (including poetry, short stories, and scientific research posters) This can include work done independently or already completed for a Bowdoin class. Please reach out to mchandar@bowdoin.edu if you have any questions.
The submission deadline is Monday, May 2nd and the show will run the week of May 9th. Click here for the submission form:
