As Arbor Day approaches and spring draws closer, I’m reminded of the immense comforts that trees and forests provide. Arbor day is an annual day set aside to celebrate trees, forests, and most importantly hope for a better tomorrow. In Maine, we are lucky enough to be surrounded by sprawling forests and beautiful trees on our campus that not only serve to amplify the natural beauty around us, but also bring value and diversity to local ecosystems. In addition to beautification and ecological value, forested areas have been shown to improve the mental health of residents and often serve as an important cornerstone of the community.
Despite the tumultuousness experienced over the past several years, local trees and forests serve as an everyday reminder of the peace and beauty that the natural environment brings to any community.
For the first Arbor Day Exhibition at Bowdoin, Sustainable Bowdoin is looking for art that explores the natural beauty that trees and forests provide. The exhibition is open to all students, and we are accepting a variety of mediums, including paintings, drawings, prints, photography, and written work (including poetry, short stories, and scientific research posters) This can include work done independently or already completed for a Bowdoin class. Please reach out to mchandar@bowdoin.edu if you have any questions.
The submission deadline is Monday, May 2nd and the show will run the week of May 9th. Click here for the submission form:
