Harriet Beecher Stowe:
The Cincinnati Years

Join Stowe House Educator Cathi Belcher Crowe as she talks about Harriet’s eighteen years in Ohio, which informed just about everything she did thereafter. Harriet may have grown up (and later spent her remaining years) in Connecticut; and written Uncle Tom’s Cabin in Maine, but she came of age and formed her opinions about slavery in the Walnut Hills neighborhood of Ohio, which Cathi just experienced first hand. Learn about the slave auction Harriet witnessed in Kentucky; the controversial Lane Debates which divided Lane Theological Seminary where Lyman Beecher was President. Learn about the Cincinnati Riots which exploded during her time over the issue of slavery. Meet John Rankin and John Parker, the first a pastor, the second a former slave ... two critical figures in the understanding of the Underground Railroad in Ohio. Learn about Harriet’s introduction to Eliza, an actual runaway slave who featured prominently in Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
After listening to real-life examples of ‘ordinary’ Ohio people who put their beliefs, their lives, and that of their families on the line, you will come away with a whole new understanding of the meaning of the word ‘Courage’.
