Lawrence Lessig, Roy L. Furman Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, will discuss on-going litigation to defend a recent Maine law that limits campaign contributions to SuperPACs. Passed overwhelmingly (by 75% of voters) via ballot initiative in 2024, the law was almost immediately challenged, and in July a federal district court ruled it unconstitutional. Lessig and Equal Citizens are appealing the ruling, arguing that election spending needs reform. Sponsored by the Department of Government and Legal Studies with support from the John C. Donovan Lecture Fund.
