What does it mean to live a life in which they are the central character, learning, moving, changing direction, and being open to the possibilities that our beautiful lives have to offer?
Mirna Valerio has a story to tell about the ways we compromise ourselves, the choices we make and how, when we realize we are way off course, we turn things back around.

Mirna Valerio is a native of Brooklyn, NY, a former educator and cross-country coach, ultramarathoner, newish cyclist and skier, and author of the Amazon bestselling memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress. She talks about her experiences as a larger woman in a world of thinner endurance athletes— while training for her first marathon...and everything that happens after!
Mirna's athletic story has been featured in the WSJ, Runner's World, on NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in the viral REI-produced documentary short, The Mirnavator. Her writing has been featured in Women's Running Magazine, Self Magazine Online, Outside Online, and Runner's World Magazine. In 2018 she was chosen as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, and in early 2020 appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show and Access Daily. She currently lives and trains in Vermont, USA.

Many thanks to our campus sponsors including Bowdoin athletics, SWAG, Peer Health, Bowdoin Outing Club, Counseling & Wellness, DEI team and the wonderful Society of Bowdoin Women & the Edith Lansing Koon Sills Lecture and Prize Fund for bringing Mirna Valerio to campus.
