Details

Photographer Rhea Banker has long been fascinated by the landscapes of Greenland. Recently, she focused her attention on dog sleds, qamutit, as they sit in and around communities, unused, in the summer. A critical part of the traditional economy for hunting and transportation, dog sleds are in an increasingly precarious position. Global warming is reducing the sea ice, rendering sleds less and less useful, threatening their very existence. In her talk, Banker will discuss what drew her to Greenland, and to qamutit in particular, and her experiences working in small communities on the Greenland coast.
