After a 3-month U.S. blockade on petroleum deliveries and multiple "regime change" threats, the island of Cuba sits at a tense political and economic crossroad. The lack of fuel has plunged Cuba into sustained nationwide electric blackouts, exacerbated economic difficulties, and put Cuba on the brink of a humanitarian crisis. What are the effects of the petroleum blockade on regular people and how have Cubans been surviving the prolonged blackouts? This talk will report on current conditions on the island and analyze how Cubans and their government are faring in the face of this brazen attack by the U.S. and a limited but growing international response to help Cuba survive the moment.
