A recent book claims we are witnessing the "death of expertise," brought about by the rise of the internet and especially social media. But crises of expertise are not new, and they have their roots in the eighteenth century. This talk looks at how eighteenth-century medical practitioners jumped into new media spaces with zeal, hoping to shape public health and morality. They quickly learned, however, that public engagement is a double-edge sword, and their authority was all too easily attacked or undermined.
