Please join us as storyteller John Bear Mitchell takes his audience on a journey led by Glooscap, legendary teacher of the Wabanaki, telling of his adventures on the ocean from what we now call Maine up to Atlantic Canada. What are these stories?  Why are they so important? What do they have to tell us about the ancient culture that still exists to this day?

John Bear Mitchell grew up on Indian Island in the middle of the Penobscot River—the headquarters of the Penobscot Nation. He is a citizen of the Penobscot tribe and has many relatives in the Passamaquoddy tribe of Sipayik. He serves as coordinator of the Native American Waiver and Educational Program, outreach and student development coordinator of the Wabanaki Center, and lecturer of Wabanaki Studies at the University of Maine. He has served on numerous museum and educational boards throughout the state with missions based on Maine's Wabanaki people, and he is a well-known Penobscot storyteller.

Free and open to the public. This event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Art, Ecology, and the Resilience of a Maine Island: The Monhegan Wildlands on view at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art through June 1, 2025.
