Gallery Talk: Alejandro Mario Yllanes’s 'Estaño Maldito' (Cursed Tin) and 'Elegia' (Elegy) with Anne Collins Goodyear and Cassandra Mesick Braun
Details
Please join us as Anne Collins Goodyear, co-director, and Cassandra Mesick Braun, curator, discuss the recent major acquisition of Bolivian modernist Alejandro Mario Yllanes’s Estaño Maldito (Cursed Tin), 1937, and Elegia (Elegy), 1944, on view at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Currents: Art Since 1875.
The recent acquisition of Estaño Maldito (Cursed Tin) marks the BCMA’s status as the first American museum to acquire a painting by Yllanes. Though executed in different media and at different scales, Estaño Maldito (Cursed Tin) and Elegia (Elegy), a wood engraving, share a common goal: bringing visibility to the exploitation of the Indigenous communities of Bolivia and across Latin America by colonial powers.
Free and open to the public. No registration required. The event will begin at noon in the Museum’s entryway Pavilion. Presented by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.
