Gallery Talk | "Creating the Modern: Works on Paper from a Recent Gift by Howard M. Haimes ’76"

Please join us for a tour of Creating the Modern: Works on Paper from a Recent Gift by Howard M. Haimes ’76, led by Frank Goodyear, Co-Director at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. The tour will begin in Zuckert Classroom.  

On view through May 31, 2026, this exhibition brings together a selection of works on paper from Europe and the United States generously donated to the Bowdoin College Museum of Art by Howard M. Haimes ’76 on the occasion of his fiftieth reunion. Created between 1893 and 1947, these prints and watercolors demonstrate how a generation of artists embraced new subjects and techniques and found inspiration in a world being remade by the forces of modernity and globalization. Some works reveal how artists experimented boldly in representing the figure, others show an interest in exploring the new language of abstraction, and several demonstrate the impact of global travel. Seen together, they suggest the importance of printmaking and watercolor to many of the most renowned artists of this period.   

The exhibition was curated by Taylor Dunn, a graduate student in the Chadwick A. Boseman School of Fine Arts at Howard University and a Summer 2025 intern at the BCMA, with assistance from Frank H. Goodyear, co-director of the BCMA. It is supported by the Karl R. Philbrick Art Museum Fund.
